#41 "MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE"

JOE: I looking at all the strips we've done so far, I
realized that we needed some more recent material.  Jon
and I are children of the 90s and early 2000s, so most of
our strips are about movies within that time frame.  We've
thrown in some older classics so as to not alienate any
older readers, but I think we were due for another flick
from the past couple of years.  Immediately Transformers
came to mind, and immediately after that came the joke.
Basically I just thought about what would happen if the
first machine an Autobot saw wasn't a car, but something
else.  Then I just thought of the funniest thing a
transformer could turn in to.

I've always been a semi-fan of Transformers; I was more
into Beast Wars than anything else.  I wasn't a huge fan
of this movie, though.  Not only did the Autobots seem
slightly out of character, they were supporting characters!
And when they were in the spotlight taking action, I found
most of it to be unintelligible: just masses of moving
mechanical parts, one transformer indiscernable from the
next.

Actually, I ran into that problem when drawing this strip.
Initially, Bumblebee was supposed to be in the whole
thing, but with the 3 Autobots cramped so close together,
it was hard to tell which part belonged to who, and ended
up a wad of different colored shapes mixed with gray.  In
the end I nixed Bumblebee until the last panel, so it came
out kind of like a fan service, which is cool I guess.

Jon made me recolor the Autobots a few days after
putting the strip up on the site.  I put a metallic gradient
on what used to be just solid gray parts on the
Transformers.

JON: When Joe first told me about the concept for this
strip I suggested all but Optimus Prime be other machines,
such as a toaster or phone booth.  Joe suggested we
should keep the strip simple and just have one of the
Autobots be a different machine.  After much deliberation,
we decided that a vibrator was the funniest machine out
there.

I was okay with that, as long as I didn't have to draw it.
